Marcin Tomalka: Raczej przyszło to później, w wieku 14-15 lat. Na wakacjach moja kuzynka zaczęła interesować się fotografią. Podchwyciłem to i spodobało mi się.
I co dalej? Ukończył pan szkołę fotograficzną?
Jak na razie nie. Rozpocząłem studnia w tym kierunku niedawno w Instytucie Twórczej Fotografii w czeskiej Opavie, lecz z powodu natłoku obowiązków zmuszony byłem zrezygnować. Na początku drogi fotograficznej trafiłem do Śląskiego Towarzystwa Fotograficznego w Katowicach, które stworzył między innymi Józef Wolny. Zauważył moje prace i zaczął mnie motywować, żeby spróbować z fotografią podziałać w kierunku zawodowym.
Współpracował pan m.in. z Gazetą Wyborczą i Dziennikiem Zachodnim, a teraz zdobył wyróżnienie za cykl zdjęć w kategorii fotoreportaż. W której z tych form czuje się pan lepiej?
Zdecydowanie w reportażu. Zdjęcia, które trafiają do gazet, najczęściej mają za zadanie obrazować tekst, który napisze dziennikarz. Obecnie jest coraz mniej miejsca na fotoreportaże w gazetach, odchodzi się od tego. Natomiast podczas realizacji reportażu najbardziej podoba mi się możliwość poznania ludzi, których fotografuję, ich historii, kultury, możliwość zwiedzania ciekawych miejsc. Poznanie życia, takiego, jakim ono jest. Aby zrealizować dobry reportaż trzeba poświęcić na to sporo czasu, którego w gazetach codziennych na ogół nie ma.
Chyba dużo pan podróżuje?
Właściwie dopiero w ostatnim czasie zaczęliśmy z moją narzeczoną wyjeżdżać poza Europę. Tanzania była drugim naszym większym wyjazdem, pierwsza była Tajlandia i Kambodża. Są to wyjazdy z plecakiem, bez biura podróży, które pozwalają lepiej poznać dany kraj, kulturę, a przy okazji dają możliwość zrealizowania ciekawego materiału. Jeszcze przed wyjazdem szukam tematów, którymi warto się zainteresować. W przypadku cyklu o albinosach towarzyszył mi kolega Michał Szalast, razem fotografowaliśmy. Podczas realizacji tego tematu korzystaliśmy z pomocy przewodnika, który był prezesem stowarzyszenia skupiającego albinosów na wyspie Ukerewe. Niezbędny był również tłumacz, który umożliwiał rozmowę z poszczególnymi osobami, które spotykaliśmy.
A skąd w ogóle pomysł, żeby zrobić reportaż akurat o albinosach?
Plan był taki żeby pojechać do Tanzanii. Kiedy zacząłem czytać o tym kraju, natknąłem się na informacje o albinosach. Temat mi się spodobał, jednak uważałem, że jest dość trudny do zrealizowania. Nie przypuszczałem, że w ogóle się to uda. A udało się trochę przypadkiem, ponieważ wcześniej zakładaliśmy, że okrążymy jezioro Wiktorii, przez Tanzanię, Ugandę i Kenię. Kiedy jednak dotarliśmy nad jezioro, spotkaliśmy podróżnika, który właśnie wracał z Ugandy i odradzał nam ten kierunek ze względu na zbliżające się wybory prezydenckie. Zrezygnowaliśmy więc z tego kraju, a że byliśmy akurat w okolicach wyspy Ukerewe, na której najprawdopodobniej żyje największy odsetek albinosów na świecie, postanowiliśmy spróbować swoich sił.
I całkiem nieźle wyszło.
No tak, udało się po długich rozmowach i pertraktacjach. Jeździliśmy od rodziny do rodziny. Zaczynaliśmy od rozmów w celu wspólnego zapoznania się ze sobą. Fotografowanie było często ostatnim etapem. Chcieliśmy uchwycić ich życie codzienne, czekaliśmy na odpowiedni moment, sytuację, ciekawy gest, spojrzenie, emocje. W tym zawodzie przede wszystkim trzeba mieć cierpliwość.
Na pomysł wysłania zdjęć na konkurs National Geographic wpadł pan sam?
Wcześniej dużo słyszałem o tym konkursie, narzeczona także namawiała mnie, żebym w końcu gdzieś wysłał swoje prace.
Którego z bohaterów swoich fotografii uważa pan za najciekawszego?
Jeśli chodzi o pojedynczą osobę, ciężko stwierdzić, ale na przykład podczas podróży do Kambodży ciekawi byli ludzie żyjący w domach na palach nad jeziorem Tonle Sap. Rozbrajało mnie to, że dla większości ludzi w Polsce, warunki w jakich żyją mieszkańcy tych wiosek to skrajna bieda. Mimo to o wiele częściej widziałem uśmiech na ich twarzach niż spacerując po polskich miastach.
Podczas podróży zdarzają się pewnie zaskakujące sytuacje.
Wydaje mi się, że chyba jednak więcej jest obaw, niż rzeczywistych zagrożeń. Szczególnie przed podróżą do Kambodży w głowie było pełno niepokojących myśli. Jechaliśmy w nieznane nam miejsce, do kraju z odmienną kulturą. Mieliśmy wykupione tylko bilety samolotowe, resztę organizowaliśmy na miejscu. Oczywiście przygotowywaliśmy się do tego dużo wcześniej, godziny spędzone przed komputerem w poszukiwaniu wszelakich informacji. Okazało się, że nie taki diabeł straszny (uśmiech). Podczas naszych dotychczasowych wyjazdów nie było żadnych przykrych niespodzianek. Zachęcam więc do podróżowania bez biura podróży, na własną rękę. Pewnie wiele osób obawia się takiej formy wyjazdu, uważa, że to nie dla nich. Jednak warto spróbować i realizować marzenia, nie ma się czego bać.
Planuje pan już kolejne podróże?
Myślimy o Indiach i Nepalu, ale na razie to tylko luźne plany.
